The “common language” signal standard by which a console commands the fixtures — the foundation of every stage-lighting system.
DMX512 is a digital signal standard for a console to send commands to fixtures. Each DMX line (universe) has 512 channels; each fixture takes a number of channels (e.g. colour, dimmer, pan/tilt) and is addressed to receive the right commands.
When more than 512 channels are needed, the system uses many universes carried over a network via Art-Net or sACN, then converted to DMX at a node. Correct wiring and addressing decide whether the system runs stably.
