Moving Head Beam

What is a Moving Head Beam?

A moving-head fixture that projects a sharp, narrow, fast-sweeping beam — the “backbone” for building a forest of beams in any Bar, Club or Lounge rig.

What is a Moving Head Beam?

A Moving Head Beam is a fixture with a Pan/Tilt moving head that produces a very narrow, high-intensity beam, clearly visible in the air with haze or smoke. The light source (a discharge lamp or high-power LED) passes through a focusing lens to form an almost parallel beam reaching tens of metres.

It is controlled entirely by DMX512: Pan up to 540°, Tilt 270°, colour via a colour wheel, gobo insertion, beam-splitting with a prism and variable sweep speed — all programmed into cues that run in sync with the music.

Pros & cons

  • A razor-sharp beam that builds a “forest of rays” in the air
  • Extremely fast sweeps for powerful climax effects
  • Many colours + prism beam-splitting and varied gobos
  • LED versions save power and last longer
  • Needs haze/smoke to make the beam clearly visible
  • A narrow angle, so many fixtures are needed for even coverage
  • Must be aimed to avoid shining into guests’ eyes

Use in a Bar / Club

Moving Head Beam on the floor

In a Bar/Club, a row of beams usually hangs on the truss behind the DJ and around the floor, sweeping in sync on the music drops to push the climax. Combined with wash lights (background colour) and lasers (a layer of thin rays), they build the full depth of a lighting design.
