Moving Head Spot

What is a Moving Head Spot?

A moving-head fixture specialised in projecting sharp gobo patterns onto floor, walls and ceiling — the most versatile light-shaping tool.

What is a Moving Head Spot?

A Moving Head Spot has a narrow-to-medium beam angle and a gobo system (a pattern wheel) with a focusing lens, letting it project sharp images, patterns and logos onto surfaces. Unlike a beam (a solid ray only), a spot excels at projected detail.

It integrates an iris (beam size), focus (sharpness), colour wheel, static + rotating gobos, and sometimes a prism and frost. All are controlled over DMX for smooth scene changes.

Pros & cons

  • Projects sharp gobo/logo patterns
  • Focus & iris adjust sharpness and beam size
  • Flexible for both rays and projected images
  • A wide range of colours and patterns
  • The ray is less solid and far-reaching than a pure beam
  • Usually pricier than a beam of the same power
  • Needs careful programming to exploit the gobos

Use in a Bar / Club

Moving Head Spot on the floor

A spot is used to print moving patterns onto the dance floor, project a brand logo onto a wall and add a moving texture layer to the space. In a club, spots pair with beams so you get both strong rays and projected detail, avoiding “flat” lighting.
