Follow Spot

What is a Follow Spot?

A strong round-beam light that tracks a performer/MC/artist as they move — separating the subject from the background.

What is a Follow Spot?

A Follow Spot projects a concentrated, high-intensity round beam, usually operated manually or on a moving base to track a performer on stage. It has an iris to size the light circle and a dowser to soft-open/close.

It separates the subject from the background, directing the audience’s attention to the MC, singer or a key moment. It can carry a colour frame and a focus adjustment.

Pros & cons

  • Tracks and highlights the main subject
  • The iris instantly sizes the light circle
  • High intensity that stands out on any background
  • A dowser gives professional soft open/close
  • Usually needs a dedicated operator
  • Few moving effects, a single focused task
  • Needs a high position with a clear sightline

Use in a Bar / Club

Follow Spot on the floor

A follow spot is used when there is an MC, a guest singer or a performance that must be separated from the club’s background light. At an event, it tracks the singer through the whole song, keeping the audience’s eyes on the main stage.
